Round 2

Battle of Ankara

1402 · Medieval

Why there: The clash unfolded on the open Anatolian plateau near Ankara because it lay along the contested frontier where Timur's eastward-expanding Central Asian empire collided with the Ottomans' newly conquered heartland, a route his cavalry could exploit and where the Turkic emirs Bayezid had subjugated might defect.

Why then: It came in 1402 because the Ottoman state had expanded rapidly under Bayezid I but had not yet consolidated its Anatolian vassals, while Timur was at the height of his power and mobility, so his massive mounted army could strike before Ottoman unity hardened.

  • The Battle of Ankara (1402) saw Timur defeat and capture the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I.
  • The Ottoman defeat triggered an eleven-year interregnum and civil war among Bayezid's sons.
  • Timur's victory delayed the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople by half a century.

Round 3

Battle of Custoza

1848 · 19th Century

Why there: Custoza sits in Austrian-controlled Lombardy-Venetia on the strategic hills guarding the routes from Piedmont into the Po Valley, making it a natural chokepoint where Radetzky could defend Habsburg power in northern Italy.

Why then: The 1848 revolutions swept Europe with liberal and nationalist uprisings, emboldening Piedmont's king to challenge a temporarily weakened Austria, but the empire's disciplined army still held the upper hand before Italian unification matured.

  • The Battle of Custoza (1848) was fought during the First Italian War of Independence.
  • The aged Austrian Marshal Radetzky defeated the army of King Charles Albert of Sardinia-Piedmont.
  • The loss stalled early efforts toward Italian unification.

Round 4

First Battle of Abukir

1799 · Early Modern

Why there: Abukir's narrow sandy peninsula guarded the western mouth of the Nile near Alexandria, making it the natural landing point where an Ottoman seaborne force, ferried by British warships, could disembark to challenge the French hold on Egypt.

Why then: Napoleon's Egyptian expedition had been stranded after Nelson destroyed the French fleet at the Nile in 1798, so by 1799 the isolated army had to repel Ottoman counterattacks while Bonaparte weighed abandoning the campaign to seize power in a politically unstable revolutionary France.

  • This was the First Battle of Abukir (25 July 1799) during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign.
  • Napoleon's forces routed an Ottoman army that had landed with British naval support near Alexandria.
  • Soon after, Napoleon left Egypt to return to France and stage his coup.
