Round 1
Battle of Red Cliffs
208 CE · Antiquity
Why there: The battle unfolded along the Yangtze, the wide southern river that formed a natural defensive barrier where the southern warlords could exploit their naval strength and force Cao Cao's northern, land-based army to fight on unfamiliar water.
Why then: With the Han dynasty's central authority collapsed in 208, rival warlords carved up the realm, and Cao Cao's bid to conquer the south before consolidation could set in made this the decisive moment that fixed the coming Three Kingdoms division.
- The Battle of Red Cliffs (208 CE) saw the allied forces of Sun Quan and Liu Bei defeat the much larger army of Cao Cao.
- Cao Cao's ships were reportedly linked together, making them vulnerable to a devastating fire attack.
- The battle paved the way for the Three Kingdoms period and is dramatized in the novel 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms.'
Round 2
Battle of the Camel
656 CE · Medieval
Why there: The clash unfolded near Basra, a strategic garrison town and river port at the head of the Persian Gulf, whose control meant command of Iraq's wealth, troops, and trade routes that both factions needed to dominate the young caliphate.
Why then: The assassination of the caliph Uthman in 656 left the Muslim community without an undisputed leader, and unresolved disputes over legitimacy, justice for his killers, and who should succeed pushed the still-young, rapidly expanded state into its first civil war.
- This battle was fought in 656 CE near a southern river port during the First Fitna, the first Muslim civil war.
- Aisha, widow of Muhammad, observed the battle from a litter mounted on a camel; the fighting around it gave the battle its name (the Battle of the Camel).
- The forces of Ali ibn Abi Talib defeated the opposing coalition, but the strife deepened early divisions within the Muslim community.
Round 3
Wounded Knee Massacre
1890 · 19th Century
Why there: The creek lay within the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where Lakota bands had been confined onto shrinking government-controlled land after being pushed off their traditional plains hunting grounds.
Why then: By 1890 the frontier was nearly closed, the bison exterminated, and desperate reservation communities embraced the Ghost Dance revival, which alarmed the U.S. Army into a disarmament campaign that turned deadly.
- The Wounded Knee Massacre occurred in December 1890 in South Dakota.
- Around 250-300 Lakota, including many women and children, were killed by the U.S. 7th Cavalry.
- It followed the rise of the Ghost Dance movement and the killing of Sitting Bull.

Round 5
Treaty of Rapallo
1922 · 20th Century
Why there: The pact was signed at Rapallo because it sat near Genoa, where the wider economic conference was being held on the Italian Riviera, letting the two delegations quietly break away and meet at a nearby coastal town.
Why then: In 1922 both Weimar Germany and Soviet Russia were diplomatically isolated pariahs of the postwar order (one crushed by Versailles reparations, the other shunned after its revolution), giving them a shared incentive to align just as the victorious powers tried to reintegrate them on their own terms.
- The treaty was signed in 1922 between Weimar Germany and Soviet Russia.
- Both nations renounced territorial and financial claims against each other.
- It was signed during the Genoa Conference and led to secret military cooperation.
