Round 2
1859 · 19th Century
Why there: Magenta sits on the Lombard plain just west of Milan, astride the roads and railways an army had to control to seize Austrian-ruled Lombardy, making it the natural place to block a French-Sardinian advance on the region's capital.
Why then: By 1859 Sardinia's Cavour had secured a secret alliance with Napoleon III's France, and railways could rush troops into the Po Valley, letting the movement for Italian unification force a war Austria had long suppressed.
Round 3
656 CE · Medieval
Why there: The clash unfolded near Basra, a strategic garrison town and river port at the head of the Persian Gulf, whose control meant command of Iraq's wealth, troops, and trade routes that both factions needed to dominate the young caliphate.
Why then: The assassination of the caliph Uthman in 656 left the Muslim community without an undisputed leader, and unresolved disputes over legitimacy, justice for his killers, and who should succeed pushed the still-young, rapidly expanded state into its first civil war.
Round 4
1938 · 20th Century
Why there: The lake sits at the tripoint where Soviet, Korean (Japanese-controlled), and Manchurian territory met, so the vaguely defined hills overlooking Lake Khasan became a flashpoint where Soviet and Japanese claims physically overlapped.
Why then: By 1938 Japan had occupied Manchuria and was pressing into China, while the USSR was fortifying its Far East, and both militaries were eager to probe each other's strength and modern armored doctrine before the wider war they both anticipated.
Round 5
