Why there: Dallas was a hostile political stronghold Kennedy visited to shore up support in Texas ahead of the 1964 election, and the motorcade's slow turn through Dealey Plaza past the Texas School Book Depository exposed him to a clear line of fire.

Why then: By 1963 televised, camera-documented presidential travel and open-car motorcades were standard practice before modern security protocols existed, and Cold War tensions had made the young president a lightning rod for domestic and ideological grievances.

• The assassination of John F. Kennedy occurred in Dallas on 22 November 1963.
• He was shot in Dealey Plaza; Lee Harvey Oswald was charged but killed before trial.
• The Warren Commission concluded Oswald acted alone.

Battle of the Golden Spurs

Why there: Fought near Kortrijk in Flanders, where the wealthy cloth-weaving towns bristled at French royal control over their prosperous trade, and the marshy, ditch-crossed ground neutralized the French heavy cavalry's usual advantage.

Why then: By 1302 Flemish urban militias had grown rich and populous enough from the booming textile trade to field disciplined masses of pikemen, whose infantry formations could finally withstand the mounted knights who had dominated earlier medieval warfare.

• The Battle of the Golden Spurs was fought near Kortrijk (Courtrai) in Flanders in 1302.
• Flemish militia defeated the cavalry of the French king Philip IV, a stunning win for commoners over knights.
• The roughly 500 captured golden spurs gave the battle its name and were displayed in a local church until a later French revenge campaign (after Roosebeke, 1382) reclaimed them.

• The Battle of the Catalaunian Plains (451 CE) pitted the Roman general Aetius and his Visigothic allies against Attila the Hun.
• The Visigothic king Theodoric I was killed during the battle.
• The clash halted Attila's westward advance into Gaul.

Battle of Rocroi

Battle of Rocroi · 1643 · Early Modern

Why there: Rocroi sat on France's vulnerable northeastern frontier along the Ardennes, guarding an invasion corridor from the Spanish Netherlands, so a Spanish army striking toward Paris had to be intercepted at this fortified border town.

Why then: By 1643 the rigid Spanish tercio squares had fallen behind newer flexible linear tactics and better-coordinated artillery, while Spain, exhausted by the Thirty Years' War and internal revolts, could no longer sustain the dominance it had held for over a century.

• The roughly 21-year-old French commander (later renowned as a great general) led the victory in 1643.
• It broke the legend of the Spanish tercios.
• The battle signaled Spain's decline as the leading European power.
