Battle of Red Cliffs

Why there: The battle unfolded along the Yangtze, the wide southern river that formed a natural defensive barrier where the southern warlords could exploit their naval strength and force Cao Cao's northern, land-based army to fight on unfamiliar water.
Why then: With the Han dynasty's central authority collapsed in 208, rival warlords carved up the realm, and Cao Cao's bid to conquer the south before consolidation could set in made this the decisive moment that fixed the coming Three Kingdoms division.
- The Battle of Red Cliffs (208 CE) saw the allied forces of Sun Quan and Liu Bei defeat the much larger army of Cao Cao.
- Cao Cao's ships were reportedly linked together, making them vulnerable to a devastating fire attack.
- The battle paved the way for the Three Kingdoms period and is dramatized in the novel 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms.'

Why there: Dallas was a hostile political stronghold Kennedy visited to shore up support in Texas ahead of the 1964 election, and the motorcade's slow turn through Dealey Plaza past the Texas School Book Depository exposed him to a clear line of fire.
Why then: By 1963 televised, camera-documented presidential travel and open-car motorcades were standard practice before modern security protocols existed, and Cold War tensions had made the young president a lightning rod for domestic and ideological grievances.
- The assassination of John F. Kennedy occurred in Dallas on 22 November 1963.
- He was shot in Dealey Plaza; Lee Harvey Oswald was charged but killed before trial.
- The Warren Commission concluded Oswald acted alone.

Battle of Arsuf
Battle of Arsuf · 1191 · Medieval
Why there: Arsuf lay along the Levantine coastal road that Richard the Lionheart's crusaders followed south from Acre toward Jaffa, keeping the sea on their right so their fleet could resupply them while Saladin's forces shadowed them from the inland hills.
Why then: The battle came during the Third Crusade, launched after Saladin recaptured Jerusalem in 1187, when Europe's kings mobilized under the Church's call to reclaim the holy city before Muslim control of the region could consolidate.
- This was a Third Crusade victory for Richard the Lionheart over Saladin.
- Richard's tight marching discipline along the coast neutralized Saladin's mobile cavalry.
- It was fought near a coastal town in modern Israel.

Why there: Solferino sits in Lombardy, the fertile northern Italian plain south of Lake Garda that Austria controlled as its gateway to the peninsula, making it the natural battleground where Franco-Sardinian forces pushed to expel Habsburg rule.
Why then: The 1859 Franco-Sardinian alliance seized the moment when a rising nationalist drive for Italian unification met Napoleon III's ambition to weaken Austria, while mass conscript armies and railways concentrated unprecedented numbers—and casualties—on a single field.
- This was the Battle of Solferino in 1859, part of the Second Italian War of Independence.
- Henry Dunant witnessed the aftermath and was inspired to found the Red Cross.
- It was fought in Lombardy, northern Italy, near Lake Garda.
