Why there: Medina was a fertile oasis settlement ringed by volcanic rock and dense palm groves, leaving only one exposed northern flank that a defensive trench could seal, turning the town's natural geography into a fortress against a cavalry-heavy army.
Why then: By 627 the young Muslim community in Medina had grown strong enough to threaten Mecca's caravan trade, prompting a broad tribal confederation to unite for a decisive siege, while the introduction of a Persian-style trench—new to Arabian warfare—neutralized the attackers' horsemen.
- The Battle of the Trench (627 CE) defended Medina against a coalition of Quraysh and allied tribes.
- The Muslims dug a trench on the city's vulnerable side, reportedly a Persian-inspired tactic (advised by Salman the Persian).
- It took place at Medina in the Hejaz region of western Arabia.

Why there: Fought near Kortrijk in Flanders, where the wealthy cloth-weaving towns bristled at French royal control over their prosperous trade, and the marshy, ditch-crossed ground neutralized the French heavy cavalry's usual advantage.
Why then: By 1302 Flemish urban militias had grown rich and populous enough from the booming textile trade to field disciplined masses of pikemen, whose infantry formations could finally withstand the mounted knights who had dominated earlier medieval warfare.
- The Battle of the Golden Spurs was fought near Kortrijk (Courtrai) in Flanders in 1302.
- Flemish militia defeated the cavalry of the French king Philip IV, a stunning win for commoners over knights.
- The roughly 500 captured golden spurs gave the battle its name and were displayed in a local church until a later French revenge campaign (after Roosebeke, 1382) reclaimed them.

Adana massacre
Adana massacre · 1909 · 20th Century
Why there: Adana was a wealthy Mediterranean port and cotton-trading hub in Ottoman Cilicia with a large, prosperous Armenian community whose visible success bred resentment among neighboring Muslim populations.
Why then: The 1908 Young Turk Revolution's promise of constitutional equality unleashed political turmoil, and the abortive 1909 counter-coup against reform gave reactionary and nationalist forces an opening to turn on the Armenians as scapegoats.
- The massacre killed an estimated 15,000-30,000 Armenians in the Ottoman vilayet of Adana.
- It erupted amid the political turmoil following the Young Turk Revolution and a failed countercoup.
- It is widely seen as a precursor to the Armenian Genocide that began in 1915.

Battle of Kursk

Why there: The front line around Kursk had formed a huge westward salient into German-held territory, tempting the Wehrmacht to pinch off the bulge from north and south while giving the Soviets a predictable target to fortify in depth.
Why then: By mid-1943 the Germans had lost the strategic initiative after Stalingrad and gambled on new heavy tanks to reverse it, while a forewarned, industrially resurgent Soviet Union had time to build layered defenses and marshal reserves for the counterblow.
- This is considered the largest tank battle in history.
- It marked the end of Germany's strategic offensive capability on the Eastern Front.
- The fighting near Prokhorovka involved hundreds of tanks clashing at close range.
