Round 3

Battle of Mu'tah

Battle of Mu'tah · 629 · Medieval

Why there: Mu'tah lay near the borderlands of the Byzantine Empire and its Arab Ghassanid clients in the Levant, making it the natural frontier zone where the expanding power from the Arabian interior first collided with the Christian empire to the north.

Why then: By 629 the newly unified Muslim polity in Arabia was strong enough to project force beyond the peninsula, while Byzantium, exhausted by its long war with Persia, faced a rising rival probing its southern frontier for the first time.

  • The Battle of Mu'tah (629 CE) pitted an early Muslim force against the Byzantine Empire and its Arab allies.
  • Three appointed commanders were killed before Khalid ibn al-Walid took command and managed a withdrawal.
  • It was fought near Mu'tah in present-day Jordan.
